Pharmacy Practice Residency Program FAQ

What are the required rotations?

There are a total of eight required 4-week rotations:

  • General Medicine
  • Pediatrics (choice of general pediatrics, pediatric ICU or neonatal ICU)
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Cardiology
  • Medical Intensive Care Unit
  • Pharmacy Administration
  • Research (December)
  • Pharmacy Operations (longitudinal)
  • Pharmacy Improvement (longitudinal)

What are the options for elective rotations?
Residents will have four elective rotations:

  • Critical care (choice of burn unit, trauma, CV surgical ICU, or neurosurgical ICU)
  • Transplant (choice of abdominal, lung or heart transplant) 
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Additional pediatrics experience (Neonatal ICU, Pediatrics ICU or General Pediatrics)

How long are the rotations?
Most rotations are 4 weeks long, with the exception of the longitudinal Pharmacy Operations, Pharmacy Improvement and Research rotations.

What is the Pharmacy Operations rotation?
This is a longitudinal staffing experience during which the resident will gain experience in the day-to-day operations of the central pharmacy. Residents will be responsible for staffing in central pharmacy every other weekend (both days).

How many residents are you recruiting?
Four.

How many presentations/projects are required?
Residents will be required to prepare and deliver one original 45-50 minute ACPE-accredited CE seminar during the winter on a topic of their choosing, provided it is approved by the Residency Director. Residents will choose a Seminar Preceptor who will assist the resident in developing the presentation. Seminars will be evaluated by pharmacists in attendance, and progress will be monitored by the Residency Advisory Committee. Residents will also be required to complete one original research project including a manuscript suitable for publication before the conclusion of the residency year. Residents will be required to present the results of their research projects at the Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference in April each year. Residents will complete a medication use evaluation (MUE) and present the results as a poster presentation at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in December. Residents will also present a formal case presentation on a topic of their choosing in the spring. Additional presentations and/or projects may include in services, drug utilization reviews, formulary monographs, etc.

What is the resident salary?
For the 2015-2016 year, it is $45,000

How many vacation/sick days will I have?
Residents will receive 20 vacation/professional days and 12 sick days.

Do residents receive health insurance?
Residents will receive a benefits package as a full time employee of LUMC. This package will include health, dental and vision insurance.

Do I need an Illinois license?
Yes. Residents must obtain Illinois licensure by August 1. If the resident is unable to do so, he or she is responsible for discussing the circumstances with the Residency Director at which time an extension may or may not be granted. When is the application due?
Application materials must be postmarked by January 5. Letters of recommendation and transcripts may be received after that date, but application materials will not be evaluated for interviews until at least two of the three letters have arrived.

How many candidates will be interviewed?
We anticipate interviewing about 30 candidates for four positions.

What is the start date?
June 22, 2015

How is the individual resident’s progress tracked?
Each resident will choose a Resident Advisor after the first month of the program who will serve as a mentor to the resident throughout the year. The Resident Advisor will report to the Residency Advisory Committee on the resident’s progress throughout the year. Residents will be evaluated after each rotation and will be evaluated by the Residency Director on a quarterly basis.

What is the interview like?
The interview day is based on a half-day schedule that includes interviews with the Residency Director, Recruitment Coordinator, the Director of Pharmacy, and three to four residency preceptors as well as a tour of the medical center.
