Yoga appears to help pelvic-floor problems, Loyola researcher says
Dr. Sandi Tenfelde, PhD, RN, APN, a Loyola Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing researcher and educator, talks about the benefits of yoga. She teaches master's level graduate nursing students and conducts research. Her husband influenced her decision to conduct research on yoga and pelvic-floor medicine.

Yoga helps strengthen the mind-body connection and appears to help women control this difficult condition. She says that there is a relationship between inflammation and urge urinary incontinence. She adds that yoga has been shown to decrease inflammation and that this has been proven in heart disease patients. Urge urinary incontinence is estimated to affect about 13 percent of the population. Only about 25 percent of people afflicted with this condition seek treatment.
There are other traditional therapies, but they don't help everyone and the side effects can be severe. Meditation also has been shown to be helpful in controlling urge urinary incontinence. In the West, we are only just beginning to see the medical benefits of yoga, she says. Dr. Tenfelde is also studying pelvic girdle pain that many new mothers experience and associated sexual dysfunction. She is also gathering information on how the African-American community incorporates alternative therapies.
