MELROSE PARK -- When Roy Krumm needed a joint replacement for his arthritic knee, he went to the specialists at Loyola University Health System. Four orthopedic surgeons at Loyola specialize in knee, hip and shoulder replacements, and one specializes in sports medicine. Dr. William Hopkinson performed Krumm's surgery at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, which became part of the Loyola health system July 1. Hopkinson does 250 to 350 knee and hip replacements per year. Being treated at full-service community hospital by a Loyola specialist was "the best of both worlds," Krumm said. Loyola has relocated its orthopedic joint program and most of its general obstetrics and general gynecology services to its Gottlieb campus. Other Loyola surgeons who do orthopedic surgery at Gottlieb include Dr. Harold Rees and Dr. Karen Wu, who specialize in hip and knee replacements, Dr. Guido Marra, who does shoulder replacements and Dr. Douglas Evans, who specializes in sports medicine. Gottlieb's remodeled orthopedic unit has 21 private rooms. Nurses and therapists specialize in orthopedic care, and a state-of-the-art operating room includes the latest imaging technology. Bringing together Gottlieb and Loyola "will elevate the level of care in the Chicago western suburbs to a new standard," said Dr. Paul K. Whelton, president and CEO of Loyola University Health System. Gottlieb president John Morgan added that the agreement between Loyola and Gottlieb "creates a health care system greater than the sum of its parts." Krumm, 67, of Forest Park, has degenerative arthritis in both knees. Before surgery, he was unable to walk more than two or three blocks without resting. His knees tended to go out when walking on bumpy surfaces. And he had to walk up stairs like a toddler, placing both feet on each step. Krumm had his right knee replaced at Loyola in 2006. In August, 2008, he had his left knee replaced at Gottlieb. "It was a big advantage being at Gottlieb, because all my other doctors are there," he said. Krumm is rehabbing his knee at Loyola Center for Health, 1211 W. Roosevelt, Maywood.
