School of Nursing to honor distinguished alumnus at Second Annual Alumni Awards Brunch
MAYWOOD, Ill. -- The Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing Alumni Board will honor William Duffy Jr., BSN (’80), MJ (’92), CNOR, with the Distinguished Alumni Award. Duffy, who is vice president of nursing at NorthShore University HealthSystem, Evanston, will receive this award at the Second Annual Alumni Awards Brunch on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010. This event marks the kick off celebration for the School of Nursing’s 75th anniversary year.
“This award is the most prestigious acknowledgement of Loyola nursing alumni accomplishments,” said Vicki A. Keough, PhD, RN-BC, ACNP, dean, SON. “We chose to honor William during our 75th anniversary year for the prominence and recognition that he has brought to the School of Nursing and to our profession.”
Prior to assuming his current position, Duffy was the assistant vice president for Perioperative Services at Evanston Hospital. He also recently completed his term as the national president of the Association of periOperative Nurses (AORN), where he led the association’s initiative for National Time-Out Day to eliminate wrong-site surgery.
“I am honored to be chosen for this esteemed award,” said Duffy. “I was lucky to have great professors and an outstanding university to guide my development as a nurse and a leader. Loyola instilled in me the belief that nurses have the power to change the world by not only touching the lives of our patients but also in shaping the way health care is delivered in our country. This belief has guided me my entire career. I feel fortunate for my practice to be recognized by my peers and professors from my school of nursing.”
Duffy’s expertise in health law and risk management and his leadership of multi-hospital perioperative and emergency departments, inpatient and outpatient nursing units and patient-care-support departments have earned him considerable recognition as a speaker both in the U.S. and abroad. He also is the author of many articles for nursing journals and publications. His most recent publication was a research paper in Nursing Administration Quarterly. He reported on the impact of the electronic medical record point-of-care documentation on the nurse/patient interaction.
