WHAT: The Midwest experienced four dangerous mold count alerts in the 2011 allergy reporting season, making it one of the worst in a decade. The final count for the season will be calculated Friday, Sept. 30.
WHO: Dr. Joseph Leija, an allergist at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital who is certified by the National Allergy Bureau to calculate the official Midwest allergy count, releases the data from April to October. For more than two decades, Dr. Leija has risen before 4 a.m. to collect specimens from his pollen-catching machine atop Gottlieb and deliver the count to the public by 7 a.m. The Gottlieb Allergy Count is available via Twitter in English, Polish and Spanish; at Gottliebhospital.org and at 1-866-4-POLLEN (476-5536).
