Below you'll find detailed answers to your most commonly asked questions.

What do I need to bring when I register as a patient?

When you check in to Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, please bring your insurance card, a photo ID and your doctor's orders. It is also very important that you bring information about an emergency contact person including their name, address and telephone number(s). If you don't want to wait on the day of your test or surgery, you can come in a few days ahead to preregister.

If you have a Living Will or a Durable Power of Attorney, you should share it with your family and bring a copy with you. These documents can help to ensure that your wishes regarding the use of certain treatments will be followed even if you are unable to communicate or make decisions due to illness, disease or accident. For more information about these types of Advance Directives, talk with your attorney or call the Social Services department at (708) 450-4989.

Also bring with you to the hospital: dentures, eyeglasses, a robe, non-skid slippers and a list of medications you are currently taking.

What should I NOT bring when I come to register as a patient?

Do not bring any medications (unless instructed by your doctor), jewelry, credit cards, purse or wallet, personal televisions, electric radios or hair dryers. If you should happen to bring any valuables with you, Gottlieb has a secure place where they can be stored during your stay.

Are pastoral services available?

Knowing that care of the human spirit is important in the healing process, our chaplains offer spiritual and emotional support and are available to all the patients, families and staff from different faiths tradition. In addition to offering pastoral care, the chaplains perform religious services and can arrange in-hospital visits by area religious clergy for hospital patients. There is also an All-faiths chapel for prayers and meditation. The chapel is located on the first floor of the hospital by the main lobby and is always open. To reach a chaplain, feel free to dial extension 4998 from any hospital phone or call at 708-450-4998 and leave a message. 

Can someone assist with after-care planning?

Our Social Services department will help patients and families with concerns or questions about hospitalization and the immediate or long-term changes it may present. They can answer your questions about community resources, advocacy services, home health care, hospice care, homemakers, nursing homes, and rehabilitation facilities.

How do I arrange my pre-admission testing?

Pre-admission testing orders will be entered by your doctor directly into the hospital's computer system. When you arrive at Registration, our caring professionals will retrieve this information from the computer system

How will Gottlieb Manage My Pain?

Gottlieb respects your right to have pain assessed, and if present, treated effectively and swiftly:

  • Your report of pain will be believed.
  • Your pain prevention and treatment is a high priority—we consider it the fifth vital sign, along with temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration.
  • Although not all pain can be completely relieved, you will receive the most effective intervention that we can safely provide.
  • In each patient room, there is a poster on the wall that explains your role in helping ensure good pain control. This poster also shows the pain scales we use at Gottlieb to help you describe your level of pain.
Should I stop taking my medications?

Use of all herbal medications, such as gingko biloba and diet formulas should be discontinued two weeks prior to your surgery.

  • Use of all aspirin, ibuprofen naproxen products should be discontinued one week before surgery.
  • Do not stop taking any medications that your doctor has prescribed for you unless he or she instructs you to do so.
What about my blood thinners?

Contact your physician for specific instructions.

What about my insulin?

If no instructions have been given, call your physician.

What if I do not have insurance or was involved in an auto accident?

At registration, you will be given an information sheet with your Gottlieb patient number on the top. You will need that G number for all communications.

  • If you forget your insurance card, you will be asked to send in a copy of the front and back of the card plus a copy of your photo ID. A pre-addressed envelope will be provided.
  • If you do not have health insurance, please contact our customer service representative at (708) 538-4902. You may be required to make a deposit and arrange a payment plan. The hospital honors Visa, MasterCard and Discover.
  • If you were involved in an auto accident, you will be billed as a self-pay patient. You and the other party involved in the accident will need to forward bills you receive to your auto insurance company to handle. If you have any questions concerning the matter of auto accidents, call a customer service representative at (708) 538-4902.
  • All physician fees are billed separately and will not appear on the hospital bill. The physician's fee covers professional charges for interpretation of tests and other services provided.
Whom should I contact for information regarding staffing?

Requests related to actual nurse staffing for a particular current inpatient stay can be requested from the department manager on the unit in person, via telephone or in writing. All other requests unrelated to a particular patient's stay for general staffing information may be requested from the Human Resources department via telephone (708) 450-4909) or in writing. Why can't I drive myself home?

After surgery and anesthesia, your reflexes and judgment may be impaired. Therefore, a responsible adult must accompany you.

Why might my surgery appointment time change?

Our surgery department must accommodate emergencies and inpatients as well as those patients scheduled in advance. As a result, the next day's surgery schedule is not finalized until the afternoon prior to your scheduled procedure.

Will I be charged for telephone calls made from my room?

You will not be charged for phone calls made from your telephone to our free-call area which includes: Bellwood, Elmhurst, Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Harwood Heights, Maywood, Melrose Park, Norridge, Northlake, Oak Park, River Forest, River Grove, Schiller Park, Stone Park and several nearby Chicago neighborhoods with the 773 area code. Calls to cell phones and pagers are not considered local calls.

To make phone calls outside the local area, you must call collect or bill it to your home phone or other third party phone, upon approval. Calling cards also are available for purchase in the Gift Shop.

Will I receive a daily newspaper?

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times are available every day you are here at no charge. A hospital volunteer will visit your room daily to see if you would like a paper.

Will I see my surgeon after the operation?

Yes, your surgeon will talk to you in the Recovery Room shortly after you wake up. However, due to the effect of the anesthetic drugs, you probably won't remember the conversation so your surgeon also will update your family members who are in the surgical waiting area.
