Honoring Michael K. Ouwenga, MD
Loved by both colleagues and patients, Dr. Ouwenga was a kind and caring man, patient listener and skilled surgeon who greatly valued his training at Loyola.
His parents, Sharon and Warren Ouwenga, have decided to honor their son with a generous $250,000 gift to Loyola's department of urology. Grateful for the exceptional education their son received, this gift will support the Michael K. Ouwenga, MD Education Fund in Urology and Michael K. Ouwenga, MD Lectureship.
The Michael K. Ouwenga, MD Endowed Education Fund in Urology will support virtual and physical educational opportunities in the department of urology such as a visiting scholar, researcher, fellow or professor from another institution.
This fund will also support the Michael K. Ouwenga, MD Lectureship, a series through which medical students, residents and faculty can collaborate with other prestigious academic institutions to enhance developments in the field of urology.
Department chair Christopher M. Gonzalez, MD, shared "Dr. Ouwenga experienced first-hand the urology department's rich tradition of excellence in patient care, research and postgraduate training under the guidance of Robert C. Flanigan, MD, the immediate past department chair who served in this capacity for 32 years. We are grateful for their generosity and for honoring their son's legacy in such a meaningful way."
Dr. Flanigan added, "Sharon and Warren's generous gift will have a tremendous impact both immediately and over the long term in our ability to train the next generation of urologists, who in turn, support thousands of patients and families throughout their careers."
Loyola Medicine's nationally ranked urology team takes a patient-centered approach to providing care for patients. The team, led by the department chair Christopher M. Gonzalez, MD, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to help tailor a customized treatment plan for each patient.
