Many of the patients and families to whom our neurosciences pastoral care chaplains minister are in the midst of sudden and unexpected illness or trauma. Our chaplains’ experience gives them a great understanding of the high levels of anxiety and fear about surgeries and the new realities that patients and families must face.
Many times chaplains are the initial eyes and ears for a family, helping them to understand the often times complicated diagnosis and medical treatments, and keeping vigil as they wait for news and watch for recovery.
Chaplains reach out to patients to offer spiritual and emotional support for some of the intense feelings that accompany such sudden illness like the fear of becoming a burden, the stress of prolonged hospital care and future uncertainties.
Neurosciences chaplains can encourage patients and families to use their faith as a source for strength and hope in finding individual, spiritual well being as they are affected by the illness.
