Sports injuries. Automobile accidents. Prostate cancer complications. These are all potential causes of urologic trauma in men. And they are all much more common than one might think. Previously, most patients with such conditions traveled a great distance in order to find a skilled specialist in urology who could perform complicated reconstructive surgery to help them heal and regain full functionality.
Today, men in the greater Chicago area benefit from having one of the country’s top urology programs right here at Loyola. Under the leadership of Nejd Alsikafi, MD, FACS, clinical assistant professor, urology, Loyola University Health System has developed a state-of-the-art program specializing in the urologic reconstruction and trauma, including the treatment of urethral stricture disease and other urologic conditions resulting from traumatic injuries. A urethral stricture is the scarring of the urethra (the channel that takes urine from the bladder to the outside) making urination difficult and is common after injury or infections of the tract. Dr. Alsikafi is the only fellowship-trained urologic trauma and reconstruction expert in a five-state area. He joined Loyola’s Urologic Trauma & Reconstruction program to offer patients the best possible care.
“The specific knowledge contained within Loyola’s Urologic Trauma & Reconstruction program is a rare find. There are only five programs like it in the country,” Dr. Alsikafi said. “Outside of Loyola, you’d have to travel over 300 miles to find a comparable set of skills and technology.”
Loyola offers the latest techniques and innovations in the treatment of all urologic conditions. The addition of this urethral reconstruction expert who specializes in urologic trauma and male urinary incontinence reinforces Loyola’s leadership in this field among all other medical centers in the greater Chicago area.
Urologic trauma requires sophisticated knowledge and complex expertise in areas such as the kidneys, bladder and urethra. Dr. Alsikafi has performed a large number of reconstructive procedures for patients surviving severe accidents. In addition, he has treated many patients who, due to prostate cancer complications, required urologic reconstruction. Issues such as erectile dysfunction or urinary incontinence are successfully treated at Loyola with the appropriate diagnosis and surgery.
Loyola’s Urologic Trauma and Reconstruction program is designed to respond quickly to patient needs and to address urologic conditions effectively. “At Loyola, we have all the equipment needed to diagnose these problems in our outpatient clinic. Critical diagnostic tests such as fluoroscopy are performed in the clinic so that patients can be diagnosed and counseled on their initial visit. This is a tremendous asset,” said Dr. Alsikafi.
“We excel not only in identifying disorders, but also in dealing with challenges during surgical procedures. An experienced reconstructive urologist knows several different ways to treat one problem and can change course mid-surgery if needed. This is essential, since serious urologic trauma injuries and their reconstruction can be quite complex,” added Dr. Alsikafi.
Loyola’s expertise in urologic trauma and reconstruction draws men from all over Chicago and the surrounding areas. The most common cases treated include urethral stricture, urinary and sexual complications of prostate cancer treatments (incontinence and erectile dysfunction), complex fistula (abnormality in genitourinary connections or passages resulting from birth defects or severe injuries) and issues that arise after a traumatic injury has healed.
With Loyola’s leading-edge program in Urologic Trauma & Reconstruction, men with complex urologic conditions now have convenient access to specialized expert care as well as to the latest technologies and procedures available.
