Volunteer at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital
Loyola Medicine is always looking for volunteers who are willing and able to enhance the health care experience by providing support and comfort to patients, families, visitors and staff. Gottlieb's Volunteer Program builds and enhances meaningful connections, caring relationships and positive engagement within our health care community. We champion diversity, equity and inclusion, and promote the importance of a comforting and engaged patient experience for all. Volunteers add a unique and personal dimension to fulfilling our mission in treating the human spirit.
General Volunteer Requirements
- Have a genuine concern for patients and families.
- Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
- Ready to commit two to four hours per week (no more than eight).
- Maintain consistent attendance.
- Participation in Orientation, Training, and in-service programs.
- Adherence to all Loyola Medicine policies & procedures.

Comfort Companion
Our Comfort Companion program also referred to as the "No One Dies Alone" program provides crucial emotional support and companionship to patients in their final days. This rewarding opportunity allows you to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals during a challenging time. This role is ideal for individuals who want to offer support, those with experience in emotional companionship, and anyone wishing to give back after losing a loved one.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Commit to four hours of volunteering per week for at least six consecutive months.
- Complete a volunteer screening process, orientation, and training.
- Compassionate and caring attitude.
- This opportunity requires special training that is held 3 times per year: January, May & September. Please email Volunteer Services to register for the next training session as soon as possible.
Responsibilities:
- Sit by the patient’s bedside and engage in conversation.
- Hold their hand, read to them, or play music.
- Provide a quiet and comforting presence.

Gift Shop Retail Ambassador
At the Gift Shop, you can provide a helping hand to patients, visitors, and colleagues while supporting fundraising efforts for Gottlieb Memorial Hospital. We look forward to your valuable contributions in enhancing the shopping experience while supporting our hospital’s mission.
Requirements:
- Commitment to at least six consecutive months of volunteer service.
- Willingness to complete the onboarding process, which includes an application, interview, background check, health screening, orientation, and training.
Responsibilities:
- Proactively greet patients and visitors upon their arrival in the gift shop.
- Assist guests as they shop and make selections.
- Stock and price merchandise to ensure an appealing display.
- Provide customer service at the register, processing payments via cash or credit card.

Patient Experience Ambassador
Bring comfort to patients and families in the emergency department, inpatient units, and outpatient clinics. This role allows you to partner with nursing leaders to enhance the hospital experience while gaining valuable insight into a health care setting.
Requirements to Volunteer:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Commit to four hours of volunteering per week for at least six consecutive months.
- Complete a volunteer screening process, orientation, and training.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service skills and a calm demeanor in crises.
Responsibilities:
- Engage in non-clinical rounding, addressing pending patient needs.
- Provide companionship through activities like reading, playing cards, or chatting.
- Work independently with minimal oversight while being highly reliable.
- Exhibit assertiveness, maturity, sensitivity, and strong communication skills.

Welcome Ambassador
Our Welcome Ambassador program at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital helps create a welcoming environment for patients and visitors. As a volunteer, you will provide exceptional customer service, guiding individuals to their destinations within the hospital while forming meaningful connections through empathetic conversations. As the first point of contact, this role is crucial in enhancing the health care experience for everyone.
Requirements to Volunteer:
- Strong communication skills and active listening abilities.
- Willingness to walk and engage with patients and families.
- Completion of comprehensive training to effectively address patient needs.
Responsibilities:
- Greet patients, families, and visitors with a friendly demeanor.
- Escort individuals to their destinations throughout the hospital.
- Arrange transportation services and provide wheelchair assistance.
- Offer directions to various hospital services.

Spiritual Care Eucharist Minister
Become a Spiritual Care Eucharist Minister and support the spiritual needs of patients and their families. As a volunteer, you will provide the sacrament of communion to Catholic patients while offering companionship to individuals of all faiths.
Requirements to Volunteer:
- Minimum age of 18.
- Must have a letter of endorsement from your home parish.
- Certification or documentation of completed Eucharistic Ministry Training.
- Proficiency in speaking and reading English.
- Professional demeanor with good eye contact.
Responsibilities:
- Visit patients and family members to discuss their spiritual needs.
- Deliver the sacrament of communion to Catholic patients.
- Be available during morning hours on weekdays and weekends.
