Loyola Medicine to Offer Fellowship in Liver and Kidney Transplant Surgery

MAYWOOD, IL – The American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) has accredited Loyola Medicine's graduate medical education program to offer a prestigious two-year fellowship in liver and kidney transplant surgery. The first fellow will begin in July 2020.

The ASTS fellowship will offer a surgeon advanced training in kidney and liver transplantation. Surgeons typically begin ASTS fellowships after completing residencies in general surgery.

Loyola is one of only 46 programs in the country – and one of only two in the Chicago area – to offer an ASTS fellowship in both kidney and liver transplantation. There are more than 260 transplant centers in the United States.

Loyola offers the highest level of multidisciplinary, integrated care for liver disease and liver failure patients who may be considering a liver transplant and for kidney disease and kidney failure patients who may be considering a kidney transplant. Loyola takes on the most challenging cases, including patients who have been turned away by other centers.

In 2018, Loyola performed 107 kidney transplants and 63 liver transplants.
