Loyola University Medical Center Ranks #5 in Illinois by U.S. News & World Report

Loyola nationally ranked in three specialties, high performing in six for 2021-22

MAYWOOD, IL – Loyola University Medical Center is ranked 5th in the state of Illinois by U.S. News & World Report. The hospital has been ranked among Illinois' top 5 hospitals each year since U.S. News rankings started in 2013. Loyola has three nationally ranked specialties, is “high performing” in 6 specialties and “high performing” in 11 conditions and procedures in the magazine’s 2021-2022 Best Hospitals rankings.

Loyola is nationally ranked in three specialty categories: Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (25th in the U.S.), Ear, Nose & Throat (37th) and Pulmonary & Lung Surgery (43rd). Six Loyola specialties are high performing: Cancer, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Geriatrics, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Urology.

Loyola also was rated high performing in eleven adult procedure and condition categories: aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart attack, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, kidney failure, lung cancer surgery, pneumonia and stroke. Hospitals named high performing in these areas were significantly better than the national average.

To achieve a national ranking, a hospital must be ranked among the nation's top 50 hospitals in a given specialty. A high performing specialty is among the top 10% in the nation.

For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. In the 15 specialty areas, 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

The U.S. News Procedures & Conditions methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality such as risk-adjusted outcome rates, volume, quality of nursing and other care-related indicators.
