About the Program

Message from the Associate Program Director

Michael Anstadt, M.D.

The Loyola Surgery Residency Program is a comprehensive training program highlighted by our outstanding, well-rounded residents, dedicated teaching faculty, and a welcoming and inclusive environment. Faculty are committed to fostering personal and professional growth of our trainees and resident education is at the center of everything that we do. The wellbeing of our residents is a priority and we value resident input in implementing new ideas for the betterment of the program.

The residency program is based at Loyola University Medical Center and the neighboring Hines VA Hospital. Residents also participate in a robust community general surgery experience at MacNeal Hospital and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital.

Our clinical curriculum is designed to maximize the educational experience of each rotation. The first year of the program emphasizes pre- and post-operative care, as well as early exposure to the operating room. It is our expectation that first-year residents become competent in basic surgical technique and can independently perform minor procedures. The second year offers a robust surgical critical care experience, as well as a broad operative experience in general surgery and vascular surgery. As residents progress through the training program, they gain increasing opportunities to develop their operative skills. Chief residents become comfortable performing complex cases that prepare them for general practice or fellowship. Our training program also focuses on developing residents' leadership and educational skills. Many of our residents hold leadership positions in prominent regional and national organizations, and are supported and encouraged to continue these endeavors.

The educational curriculum includes at least four hours of dedicated, protected education time each week, which includes Grand Rounds, didactics conference, and skills training sessions. Our didactics program follows the SCORE curriculum, designed to prepare residents for in-service and board exams, as well as to learn the science behind the practice of surgery. Additional conferences include weekly M&M, monthly journal club, and various skills courses. The Advanced Procedural Education Center (APEC) has high-fidelity simulation equipment and full-time staff to assist residents with independent practice or organize skills training sessions. All residents will complete our robotics training program and graduate with more than enough robotics cases to achieve certification. We offer on-site courses in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM) and Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET). Residents will also complete Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) and Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES).

At Loyola Surgery, we train future leaders in academic surgery. Our residents graduate with a sense of pride and confidence in the training they have completed and relationships they have built. We look forward to welcoming you to our program.
