MAYWOOD, IL – The Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) has designated Loyola University Medical Center as an Antimicrobial Stewardship Center of Excellence (CoE).

This distinction recognizes institutions that have created stewardship programs led by infectious disease physicians and pharmacists that are of the highest quality and have achieved standards aligned with evidence-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention national guidelines. Only 78 programs among all U.S. hospitals and healthcare systems have been designated Centers of Excellence.

"It is our duty as clinicians to provide the best possible environment for treatment and healing," said Kevin Smith, MD, chief medical officer for Loyola University Medical Center. "Preventing infections is central to maintaining our medical center's healing environment.

Each year, more than 700,000 individuals die due to antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections. Designated Center of Excellence programs aim to prevent and combat AMR infections.
