Gastroenterology & Hepatology Fellowship

Overview of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program

The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship at Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC) is a rigorous, ACGME-accredited three-year program designed to cultivate excellence in clinical care, education, and research. Our fellows train in a quaternary care academic medical center and benefit from a broad clinical experience that includes general gastroenterology, transplant hepatology, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), motility disorders, pancreaticobiliary disease, and interventional endoscopy.

Loyola University Medical Center is part of Loyola Medicine, a nationally recognized health system affiliated with Trinity Health, one of the largest Catholic, not-for-profit health care organizations in the U.S.

Strengths of the Program

  • Comprehensive clinical training: Fellows gain expertise in managing complex GI and liver diseases across a variety of settings, including tertiary care, a VA medical center, and a community-based hospital network.
  • Dedicated hepatology and liver transplant exposure: With five transplant hepatologists and a multidisciplinary transplant team, fellows receive extensive exposure to advanced liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver transplantation, participating in 80+ liver transplants annually.
  • State-of-the-art endoscopy training: Fellows develop advanced endoscopic skills through rotations in interventional endoscopy, pancreaticobiliary disease, and therapeutic endoscopy, with access to seven endoscopy suites, fluoroscopy rooms, and cutting-edge endoscopic procedures.
  • Robust research and academic opportunities: Each fellow engages in scholarly activity, guided by dedicated research mentors, a structured research curriculum, and annual research presentations.
  • Diverse patient population: Training occurs across LUMC, Hines VA Medical Center (Illinois’ largest VA), and MacNeal Hospital, ensuring exposure to a broad spectrum of GI and liver conditions across different healthcare settings.
  • Multidisciplinary learning environment: Fellows participate in weekly multidisciplinary GI and hepatology conferences, transplant listing meetings, tumor boards, and board review sessions, fostering collaboration with specialists in surgery, oncology, pathology, and radiology.
  • Fellow well-being and support: Loyola provides a wellness-focused training environment with protected academic time, wellness initiatives, and structured faculty mentorship.
  • Exceptional graduate outcomes: The program boasts a 100% board pass rate over the last seven years, with graduates pursuing academic faculty positions, private practice, advanced endoscopy, and transplant hepatology fellowships.
