Burn Center Services

The Burn Center at Loyola Medicine provides comprehensive care for adults and children with thermal injuries, electrical burns, chemical injury, frostbite, toxic epidermal necrolysis, inhalation injury and complex soft tissue infections.

Loyola’s multidisciplinary team at the Burn Center includes specialists from pulmonology, wound management, nutritional support and physical rehabilitation. The center’s staff includes nurses, patient care technicians and patient service associates. Loyola’s Burn Center is one of the busiest in the Midwest, treating over 4,000 patients each year. About 40 percent of these patients are children.

Loyola’s Burn Center provides the most advanced burn care to patients. The center houses an expanded hydrotherapy area for cleaning and dressing wounds and a rehabilitation area where physical and occupational therapists work with patients. An outpatient burn clinic is open five days a week to provide follow-up care.

Loyola’s Burn Center is involved in research on postburn immunosuppression, wound healing, burn-induced coagulation disorders and nutritional support. Loyola’s research is integrated with research efforts at Loyola's Burn and Shock Trauma Institute.

The additional availability of multiple clinical trials dealing with treatments for pulmonary injury, nutritional support, support of the patient's ability to resist infection and wound healing enhance the ability of Loyola's Burn Center to provide the most advanced care to patients.

Loyola’s Burn Center was awarded verification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Burn Association (ABA). This recognition is a mark of distinction for burn centers and signifies a level of excellence in burn care from the time of injury through rehabilitation.
