Emergency Medical Services
Loyola Medicine’s emergency department treats some of the region's most critically ill and injured patients. The severity level of Loyola’s emergency admissions is among the highest in the country.
Loyola treats approximately 45,000 seriously ill and injured patients in the emergency department every year. Problems seen include major trauma, high-risk obstetrics, unstable cardiac conditions, poisonings and severe childhood illnesses.
Our 27-bed emergency facility is one of the most advanced in the Midwest and contains specialty care sections for trauma, cardiac care and pediatrics.
Loyola has been recognized by the American College of Cardiology with the 2019 Platinum Performance Achievement award for providing excellent care to heart attack patients.
The groundbreaking Heart Attack Rapid Response Team (HARRT) at Loyola is on-site at Loyola University Medical Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week, available to stop a potentially fatal heart attack.
Specialty Services
Level I Trauma Center
Loyola’s Level I Trauma Center has the highest designation possible in Illinois and specializes in the resuscitation and care of patients with multiple injuries.
Our trauma center provides 24-hour coverage by emergency physicians, nurses and general surgeons and is supported by specialists from orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery, anesthesiology, radiology, internal medicine, plastic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatrics and critical care.
Pediatric Emergency Care
Loyola provides the Chicago suburbs' only round-the-clock pediatric trauma program and pediatric emergency medicine services for the most severe injuries in children.
In addition, a “fast track” pediatric triage within Loyola's emergency department ensures that children receive the specialized care they need.
EMT and Paramedic Education
As the principal resource hospital in Chicago’s western suburbs, Loyola provides training and education to emergency medical technicians and paramedics in the surrounding areas.
This shows Loyola’s expertise in emergency care and commitment to the care of the community.
Research
Loyola’s emergency medical services, in conjunction with the Burn and Shock Trauma Institute, receives state and federal grant funding to evaluate the Illinois Trauma Registry.
Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children is a collaborative program between Loyola and the Illinois Department of Public Health aimed at improving pediatric emergency care in Illinois.
Faculty members also conduct multiple clinical trials that study the effect of investigational drugs on hemorrhage, transfusion and sepsis in trauma patients.
