Primary Care for All Ages
Comprehensive, Coordinated Care for Your Health and Wellness
At Loyola Medicine, the first line of defense for your overall health is your primary care physician (PCP). Primary care physicians are doctors who monitor your overall health and are trained in every major area of medicine from birth through your senior years. Loyola’s primary care physicians provide annual physical exams, recommendations for disease prevention, diagnosis of illness, referrals to specialists and patient education.

Your primary care physician will work with you to create a foundation for a healthy life and provide timely and comprehensive treatment for any medical issues that arise.

What are the Different Types of Primary Care?
Loyola offers several unique areas of primary care to provide optimal patient health:
- Family medicine — Loyola’s family medicine doctors treat patients of all ages, from infants to adults. In many cases, family medicine doctors treat multiple patients in the same family. Loyola’s board-certified family medicine doctors have specialized training in the treatment of conditions facing patients at multiple stages in their lives.
- General pediatrics — From newborns to adolescents, pediatricians are board certified to diagnose, treat and manage health conditions of children, as well as provide referrals to Loyola’s nationally recognized specialists when needed.
- Immediate care — Loyola’s Immediate Care Centers allow you to receive urgent medical attention without an appointment. However, it is not the same as emergency care: there are certain times when immediate care is appropriate (non-life-threatening circumstances) and when emergency care is needed (life-threatening circumstances).
- Internal medicine/pediatrics — Internal medicine/pediatrics (often called med/peds) refers to a doctor’s dual certification in internal medicine and pediatrics. A med/peds doctor has the background to treat general and complex health issues in both adults and children. As a leading academic medical center, Loyola is home to many med/peds doctors.
- Internal medicine — Loyola’s internal medicine doctors specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and management of non-surgical diseases, as well as the general health of adults. Our internists have received specialized training to diagnose complex conditions and provide the most advanced treatment options. Your internist can provide a referral to a Loyola specialist if needed.
- Sports medicine — Loyola’s sports medicine doctors are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries and conditions. Many of our primary care physicians are board certified in sports medicine, allowing them to care for patients with sports-related issues and coordinate rehabilitation or treatment with our highly skilled specialists and physical therapists.
- Women’s health — Loyola’s women’s health team focuses on the overall health of women. From screening tests and healthy lifestyle guidance to cardiovascular and cancer risk reduction, Loyola’s women’s health program takes an integrated approach to caring for women of all ages. Your doctor can make referrals to Loyola’s specialists for any condition that requires more specialized treatment.
