Loyola’s pulmonary and critical care medicine program offers expert medical and surgical treatment in outstanding, conveniently located facilities.

We have multidisciplinary facilities at the Loyola University Medical Center campus, in addition to outpatient services at other locations.

We offer the following specialized services to provide you with the most comprehensive care:

  • Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency — The Alpha-1 Foundation has designated Loyola University Medical Center as an Alpha-1 Clinical Resource Center for the care of patients with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and its related lung and liver diseases. Our specialists provide long-term continuity of care up to and including lung transplant surgery if necessary.
  • Center for Sleep Disorders — This center includes an accredited sleep laboratory that offers diagnostic studies for a full range of sleep disorders. Loyola offers a multidisciplinary approach to care that involves clinicians and staff from the departments of neurology, otolaryngology and psychiatry. Our pulmonary sleep specialists provide care in ambulatory care clinics at Loyola University Medical Center and in Oakbrook Terrace.
  • Chronic ventilator management — Loyola’s specialists provide ventilator care to patients with chronic respiratory failure at RML Specialty Hospital in Hinsdale, Illinois, one of the largest long-term care facilities in the country.
  • Cystic fibrosis program — All aspects of cystic fibrosis care are available at Loyola, including gastrointestinal, nutritional and social support.
  • Interventional bronchoscopy — In addition to basic bronchoscopy, Loyola offers a variety of additional techniques such as bronchial stent placement and ultrasound-guided biopsy.
  • Lung transplant surgery — Advanced lung diseases are treated collaboratively between pulmonary transplant specialists and cardiothoracic surgeons. The transplant program also includes a staff of psychologists, nurses, clinical pharmacists, social workers, nutritionists and physical therapists.
  • Pulmonary function laboratory — Basic pulmonary function tests are available for the diagnosis and management of patients with acute and chronic pulmonary diseases, including asthma, common cold, shortness of breath, emphysema, wheezing and pulmonary fibrosis.
  • Respiratory care services — Loyola's respiratory care team have received the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) designation and meet the strictest safety and quality standards related to the provision of respiratory care services by qualified practitioners.
