Overview of the Administrative Perinatal Center

The Loyola Administrative Perinatal Center (APC) is designated by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). The APC is a liaison and resource to provide quality maternal-fetal and neonatal care, and outreach education to hospitals within a network defined by IDPH. As the APC, Loyola is dedicated to improving health services in high-risk pregnancy and infant care while striving to improve accessibility of maternal-fetal medicine and neonatal services within our communities to reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. 

The APC receives referrals from network hospitals and a wide variety of physician practices throughout Cook, Will and DuPage counties. Loyola provides quality improvement activities and education that are specific to the needs of the network hospital and support the initiatives and programs of IDPH with an aim to improve outcomes for pregnant women and their babies. Loyola Medical Center is a Level III perinatal center with a proven record of accomplishments in providing excellent care to the high-risk mother while improving outcomes for infants born with congenital conditions or newborns requiring advanced medical and/or surgical care.

The Level III Perinatal Center and APC offers a range of services including:

  • Administration and implementation of IDPH Perinatal Health Care Programs
  • 24/7 transport services for high-risk infant care
  • Individualized inpatient and outpatient consultation services
  • Professional educational outreach opportunities for nurses and physicians
  • A team of professionals that assist in reviewing complex maternal and neonatal cases for the purpose of quality improvement and education
  • A center of communication between IDPH and the network hospitals

Level III: Perinatal Tertiary Care Services

Loyola University Medical Center (LUMC) is a university-affiliated hospital that provides comprehensive care for women experiencing complicated, high-risk pregnancies and operates a NICU for newborns with special care needs at any gestation, and transfer/transport services. LUMC functions as a resource to network hospitals and accepts transfers of maternal and neonatal patients from in-network and out-of-network physician referrals.

Level III: Neonatal Intensive Care

Level III hospitals provide comprehensive care for women experiencing complicated, high-risk pregnancies and operates a NICU for newborns with special care needs at any gestation, and transfer/transport services.

Level IIE: Extended Neonatal Capabilities

Level IIE hospitals provide care to women and newborns at moderate risk. The hospital may care for maternal patients with selected obstetric complications that present after 32 weeks gestation. They operate a special care nursery but do not operate a NICU. A level IIE provides services in a Special Care Nursery that may include premature infants of 30 or more completed week's gestation or an infant with low birth weight that is greater than 1250 grams.

Level II: Intermediate Maternity and Newborn Hospitals

Level II hospitals care for maternal patients with selected obstetric complications that present after 32 weeks gestation. A level II nursery is capable of caring for premature infants at 32 or more week's gestation who are otherwise well and Infants with a birth weight greater than 1500 grams who are otherwise well.
