How are Pediatric Dermatologic Conditions Diagnosed?
Children with dermatologic problems such as eczema may complain of itchy, dry skin. Other children may have moles, warts or birthmarks and some may exhibit a dermatologic response to an allergen.
In order to determine and understand the cause of your child’s symptoms, your child’s dermatologist will begin with a physical exam and a complete medical history of your child and your family.
Making a correct diagnosis is a crucial first step in addressing any skin problem, whether it’s an allergy, bacterial or fungal infection, or some other problem of the skin
At Loyola, our child’s dermatologist may recommend the following tests to understand your child’s condition more fully:
- Culture
- Patch testing
- Skin biopsy
How are Pediatric Dermatologic Conditions Treated?
Loyola’s pediatric dermatologists treat a full range of skin conditions. Treatment often involves moisturizers, prescription skin creams and ointments, such as hydrocortisone.
The following non-invasive treatments are often the first line of treatment for skin conditions:
- Baths or showers
- Dietary changes
- Hydrocortisone
- Immunosuppressants
- Moisturizers
- Prescription creams and ointments
- Retinoid creams
- Stress management
- Ultraviolet light therapy
- Vitamin D creams
For more serious conditions, your Loyola dermatologist may recommend surgical and laser treatments, which can include:
- Acne removal
- Dermabrasion
- Mohs microsurgery
- Port wine stain removal
- Strawberry birthmark removal
- Wart removal
Laser treatments are performed on an outpatient basis and don’t require a surgical incision or anesthesia. This is usually less painful than surgery and requires very little recovery time.
Ongoing Research to Improve Pediatric Dermatology Treatments
The pediatric dermatologists at Loyola frequently engage in research and have been part of several prominent national clinical trials.
