Alumni Testimonials
The fellowship helped me SO much. From finding appropriate disposition plans for my patients to having the very much needed goals of care conversation. I don’t know how I would have felt comfortable doing my current job without the experience from fellowship.
– E.I., Class of 2021, Hospitalist
I felt at home while training in geriatric medicine at Loyola University Medical Center/Hines VA Hospital. Everyone treated me with courtesy, respect, and care. It was a privilege and an honor working and gaining knowledge in the field of geriatric medicine. Working with the elderly patients, especially our veterans, was a true pleasure and helped me grow in appreciation for them as I stand in awe of their lives. Thank you so very much for giving me this opportunity to advance my medical career.
– R.A., Class of 2019, Geriatrician
My fellowship in geriatrics at Loyola was an enlightening experience to help me feel confident and prepared to take care of my geriatric panel in the inpatient, outpatient and long term care settings. I chose my fellowship at Loyola due to program's close collaboration with Hines VA. Through the VA I had a chance to be exposed to new valuable experiences and opportunities such as working in the hospice unit, the blind center rehab, the SCI unit, and driver's rehab that I currently use as a geriatrician offering excellent service caring for our nation's finest as a current VA employee. I feel like I can offer excellent care that I otherwise would not have been able to because of my experiences at Loyola and the VA.
– R.S., Class of 2018, Geriatrician
As I pulmonary and critical care attending who also completed a geriatric medicine fellowship, I use many of the skills I learned in geriatrics on a daily basis in the ICU or in my pulmonary clinic! Some of these skills include goals of care discussion and ICU delirium prevention and treatment! The fellowship environment is very friendly—the attendings are great and always supportive, you’ll be assigned to take care of some veterans who live in the CLC as a long term residents and you’ll take care of their medical issues during the whole academic year. You will know them by heart and develop a strong bond with them. Interestingly, you’ll find many of the attendings are graduates of the program! I think this just proves that when you go there you love to stay! Good luck with your application!
– K.H. Class of 2018, Pulmonary/Critical Care attending
I completed my geriatric fellowship at Loyola University/Hines VA after a year of independent practice in Canada. As a newly arrived immigrant, I was impressed with its inclusive culture and diversity. I came in wanting to improve my knowledge in rural geriatric care, palliative and hospice care, wound care and treatment of dementia. What I truly appreciated about this program was its support in offering me the flexibility to pursue these goals. I use the skills I gained everyday in treating my vulnerable geriatric population in the south side of Chicago. Post-fellowship, the staff and program director continue to be a source of support and advice. I wholeheartedly recommend this program to all those interested in geriatrics!
