Program Education, Clinical Training & Training Facilities
Clinical Training
Loyola Medicine's two-year Nephrology Fellowship program provides the trainee with the requisite experience in the evaluation and management of patients with a broad range of renal-related disorders including:
- Acid-base physiology
- Fluid and electrolytes
- Acute and chronic renal failure
- Continuous renal replacement therapy
- Hemodialysis
- Peritoneal dialysis
- Renal transplantation
- Glomerular diseases
- Nephrolithiasis
- Hypertension
The trainee will learn these objectives by supervised direct patient contact, research seminars, journal clubs, renal pathology conferences, biweekly clinic-pathological conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences, a dialysis and interventional nephrology seminar series, renal transplant conferences and monthly review of a basic physiology topic facilitated by an attending nephrologist.
The trainee will have opportunities to assume responsibility under appropriate supervision for the care of patients in continuity clinics. Our fellows also participate in quality improvement projects to acquire the requisite skills to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
Training Facilities
Fellows rotate through the inpatient, outpatient and consultative inpatient services of Loyola University Medical Center and the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital.
The distribution of ages and genders in our clinics approximates their distribution among the general population with chronic kidney disease and its related-disorders.
The fellows also round at the Loyola and Hines dialysis units to acquire firsthand experience in managing patients with end stage renal disease and leading a multidisciplinary management team.
Additionally, the fellows spend time in dedicated renal transplant clinics and participate in interventional nephrology procedures.
