Residency Experience & Rotations
Continuity Clinic
The Loyola Med-Peds resident clinic is located on the main medical center campus. Med-Peds residents conduct both adult and pediatric visits in every clinic session under the supervision of dedicated continuity clinic attendings.
For those residents seeking a supplemental continuity clinic experience, the opportunity to provide care to uninsured, often undocumented, patients in the Loyola Access to Care clinic is an elective option.
Med-Peds and 4+1
In 2011, the Internal Medicine residency program transitioned to a block scheduling system called "4+1" in which 4-week blocks of inpatient or consult service were followed by a 1-week ambulatory experience referred to as the "+1" week. The new system required division of the resident body into 5 rotational groups called "Firms" and resulted in a unique opportunity for building camaraderie and professional development.
As a tribute to its categorical integration, the Loyola Med-Peds program followed suit in the same year by incorporating our residents into Medicine's 4+1 scheme. Med-Peds residents rotate along with their Firm peers and participate in the "+1" week experience during their Medicine time. The half-day educational session known as Friday School (can you guess which day of the week it occurs?) is considered so valuable for learning and Firm bonding that Med-Peds residents attend those sessions even during Peds time.
The "+1" week varies in content depending on level of training but consistently helps to satisfy the educational requirement for ambulatory exposure in Internal Medicine.
Interns complete week-long experiences in either Urgent Care or Emergency Medicine and sample "+1" schedules are as follows:
MON | TUE | WED | THU | FRI | SAT | SUN
AM | Continuity Clinic | Urgent Care | Urgent Care | Urgent Care | Friday School | GOLDEN | WEEKEND |
PM | Admin Half-Day | Urgent Care | Urgent Care | Urgent Care | Urgent Care |
MON | TUE | WED | THU | FRI | SAT | SUN
AM | Continuity Clinic | ED | Friday School | GOLDEN | WEEKEND
PM | ED | Continuity Clinic | ED |
Senior residents utilize the "+1" week for grouped subspecialty clinic experiences and Med-Peds specific clinics, as outlined in this sample schedule:
MON | TUE | WED | THU | FRI | SAT | SUN
AM | Continuity Clinic | General ID | MP Primary Care | Continuity Clinic | Friday School | GOLDEN | WEEKEND |
PM | Transplant ID | Adolescent Gynecology | Admin Half-Day | HIV | CF/Transplant |
Loyola Med-Peds residents alternate between the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics every 4 months. Rotational experiences are carefully tracked and yearly schedules are constructed by the Program Director and categorical Chief Residents in close collaboration with individual residents.
