Message from the Incoming Program Director

Michael Stokas, MD, MS, FACP, FAAP

I am thrilled to welcome you to the Internal Medicine Residency at Loyola University Medical Center. I currently serve as one of the Associate Program Directors (APDs) and will assume the role of Program Director on July 1, 2025. My journey at Loyola began as an undergraduate student at Loyola University Chicago, then at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, and continued on during my combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at Loyola University Medical Center. I had the honor of being a Chief Resident and now have been part of the clinical teaching faculty for nearly a decade.

I am excited to take on the role of Program Director and lead our already exceptional program into the future. The strength of our program lies in the outstanding people at Loyola. Our trainees are intelligent, hardworking, and dedicated to the patients they serve. We care for a diverse patient population, many of whom are underserved and marginalized. Our residents are directly involved in the care of some of the most complex patients in the country, which ensures that our graduates are among the best-trained Internists, capable of handling any clinical situation. Our faculty is dedicated to ensuring that our trainees are clinically excellent, actively engaged in meaningful research, and mentored throughout their training.

Our residency has a strong leadership team; the combined experience of our Program Director and Associate Program Directors totals over 75 years!  Together with our Chair, Dr. Marilyn Glassberg, and Dr. Kevin Simpson, our Program Director for the past 29 years (who will be remaining on the team as an APD), our training program is well positioned to provide the rigorous training that will allow every one of our residents to excel and thrive. We are excited to have the opportunity to have you learn more about our program.

Interview Season Philosophy on Equity

Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is committed to fostering a diverse and equitable environment of excellence. We conduct application reviews blinded to photos to ensure impartiality and focus solely on the merits of each candidate's qualifications. Our interviewers undergo training to mitigate bias, ensuring fair and objective evaluations. In alignment with national recommendations, we avoid in-person visits of any kind during the application process, including “second looks”. We believe this provides all candidates with an equal opportunity regardless of their geographic or financial circumstances. We believe these practices strengthen our program and contribute to the development of outstanding physicians.

Categorical Applicants

Thank you for visiting our website and for your interest in Loyola Medicine's Internal Medicine Residency program! Please note the following application requirements:

  • The Loyola Internal Medicine Residency Program will again participate in the Supplemental ERAS Application process for the 2025 match.
  • Applications will be accepted via ERAS only. Allopathic and osteopathic applicants are welcome.
  • All applications must be received by December 1st.
  • While we preferentially review applications from those who signal our program, we also consider applicants who do not signal us.
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your professional qualifications. We strongly encourage that one of these letters be a Department of Medicine Chairman letter.
  • Applicants must have graduated from medical school within the last two years. Applicants from international medical schools must be ECFMG eligible prior to any interview and certified prior to starting residency, if matched.
  • J1 visas are sponsored. H1B visas will not be sponsored.
  • Applicants with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) status are welcome.

Please note that each ERAS application is reviewed individually. Each year we receive thousands of applications for a limited number of interview slots. To help you plan your application strategy, it may be helpful for you to know the characteristics of the typical applicant invited to interview this past recruitment season:

Our intern selection committee prioritizes applicants who are active final year medical students, who have demonstrated a high level of performance throughout medical school and particularly in rotations within Internal Medicine, and who have consistently excellent performance on certification exams.

If you have any specific questions about the Loyola Internal Medicine Residency itself, which are not addressed elsewhere on our website, you are encouraged to contact our Program Coordinator in charge of recruitment, Stephen White at spwhite@lumc.edu.
