Point of Care Ultrasound Training 

The Internal Medicine residency at Loyola has been providing formal diagnostic Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) instruction to residents since 2017. All residents receive core instruction with additional opportunities for instruction and teaching available.

Workshops:

Workshops include formal didactics and supervised hands-on live scanning on SPs.

  • PGY 1 residents learn the Cardiac Limited Ultrasound Exam (CLUE).
  • PGY 2 and PGY3 residents learn kidney and bladder scanning and 2-region compression protocol for DVT scanning.

 

Didactics:

Residents on the General Medicine rotation have formal diagnostic POCUS education on Mondays which includes:

  • Gel rounds at the patient bedside
  • Boards-style cases and questions
  • Image review

 

Equipment:

Each General Medicine and Cardiology team has their own Butterfly hand-held ultrasound and iPad to use during the rotation.

Resident teams have dedicated Sonosite PX stand-up ultrasounds with multiple probes available for additional scanning.

Optional Advanced Experiences available including formal medical student course instructor to build teaching skills, critical care protocol education offered several times throughout the year. 

Our Chief Residents attend the Chest: Essentials in Critical Care Ultrasound Course early in their Chief year allowing them to hone their bedside skills and provide even more robust resources for our residents.
