Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeries Available at Loyola
Loyola’s highly experienced oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in surgeries of the head, face, mouth and jaw. Our team has received specialized training and offers state-of-the-art surgical treatments not available at other medical centers.
Your doctor will develop an individualized treatment plan for your needs, with procedures that may include:
- Bone grafting — Your surgeon may use synthetic bone, a piece of your own bone or donated bone to fuse joints that prevent movement, restore broken bones that have gaps or repair injured bone that has not properly healed.
- Dental implants — For patients who have lost a tooth due to disease or injury, your surgeon may recommend a dental implant, which is surgically anchored in the jawbone. Implants look and feel like one’s own teeth. For your convenience, our oral and maxillofacial surgeon will collaborate with a general dentist at Loyola’s Oral Health Center for a tooth implant procedure.
- Maxillofacial deformity reconstruction surgery — Our team of oral and maxillofacial surgeons works closely with other Loyola specialists to correct congenital and acquired deformities, such as cleft lip and palate and post traumatic deformities, which can impede normal growth and function.
- Reconstructive surgery after trauma — Trauma to the face and jaw can require delicate reconstructive surgery to restore a patient’s jaw movement and replace broken or lost teeth.
- Reconstructive surgery after cancer — Cancers of the paranasal sinus, palatal epithelium and minor salivary glands can require surgical removal of part of the jaw. Loyola’s oral and maxillofacial surgeons will closely collaborate with our ear, nose and throat (otolaryngology) specialists and head and neck surgeons to devise a surgical solution that will correct lost form and function. - TMJ (temporomandibular joint) surgery — If other conservative treatments fail to produce results, your dental specialist may suggest surgery to ease the pain of TMJ disorder, including total jaw replacement surgery.
- Management of impacted teeth — When wisdom teeth, cuspids or bicuspids don’t have room to grow, they can cause pain, infection, gum disease and cysts. Your dental specialists may suggest they be surgically removed or aligned. Treatment is commonly done with sedation and depends on your age and condition. The safest, most advanced form of sedation and pain control is used for these procedures.
