Telemedicine
World-Class Specialty Care from the Comfort of Your Community Hospital
Loyola Medicine is proud to partner with community hospitals to provide expert patient care with our advanced telemedicine program. Working with your doctors to eliminate distance barriers and improve medical services that might not be consistently available in the hospital closest to home, Loyola’s program can offer you and your doctors access to a Loyola specialist 24 hours a day.
In hospitals partnered with Loyola’s telemedicine team, we ensure that you and your doctors have access to expert, academic-level insights and subspecialty care. With state-of-the-art technology, Loyola’s specialists can communicate with you and your doctor from a remote location. Working collaboratively, we can develop individualized treatment plans for our patients in their community hospitals.
Guided by strict technical standards and clinical practice guidelines, Loyola’s telemedicine program is a convenient way to extend our academic-based medical care to your community. Loyola specialists can become a part of your hospital team, interacting with emergency department doctors, patients and families to recommend treatment, reduce disability and save lives.
Why Choose Loyola for Telemedicine?
Loyola is the Midwest leader in telemedicine care and one of few hospitals nationwide to provide specialized stroke care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our program was created by nationally recognized experts in telemedicine—doctors with years of experience in direct bedside applications of the technology—and builds on solid evidence both within our own system and in larger networks.

What to Expect with Telemedicine
For hospitals that are partnered with Loyola’s telemedicine program, we use information technology to exchange medical data, images and sound. This allows doctors, hospitals and other clinicians to deliver consultations, procedures, examinations, test results and monitoring services to patients who are in another hospital or even in another city.
Linked wirelessly to Loyola’s specialists, your doctor in your community hospital can have two-way audio and visual interaction, movement around the bedside and real-time transmission of tests and electronic records. Our specialist can listen to your heartbeat, see the color of your eyes and hear the quality of your breathing.
Through telemedicine, Loyola can provide expertise that is not available at your community hospital. This can provide you with access to specialized care and improves the overall quality of care you are receiving through the following technology:
- Medical information — Your community hospital and Loyola’s specialists can securely and electronically share medical information such as imaging, test results and medical history in order to provide comprehensive care to our shared patients.
- Provider to provider — Loyola provides real-time, remote physician-to-physician consultation through audio, video and data sharing technology.
- Virtual clinic — Loyola provides consultations with you and your doctor through a live, two-way video encounter.
What Services are Provided with Telemedicine?
Loyola’s subspecialists are fellowship-trained and board-certified in a wide range of specialties. Our expert doctors have advanced training and vast experience caring for critical, hard to treat, uncommon and rare diseases and conditions.
Loyola offers a range of advanced telemedicine services for community hospitals, who often consult with Loyola’s specialists for the following specialized care services:
- Pediatrics — Loyola combines telemedicine with a rapid response team to extend our coverage of pediatric patients and improve patient safety and quality of care. Telemedicine enables a nurse, physician, therapist or other staff member to quickly link to a pediatric intensive care specialist. Using remote technology, the specialist can evaluate the child and recommend immediate intervention. Learn more about our pediatric critical care unit.
-
Stroke — Expert interventions, when administered within the first few hours after a stroke, can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life. Telemedicine and the world-class Loyola Stroke Center provide expert, timely care through rapid stroke diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
For the benefit of stroke patients arriving at a community hospital emergency room that does not have a 24/7 stroke team available, Loyola’s vascular neurologists are available around the clock to provide expert care. We use remotely controlled robotic systems located in the emergency departments of participating community hospitals so you have immediate access to the latest subspecialists with vast experience treating stroke patients.
The American Stroke Association has awarded Loyola its Gold Performance Achievement Award for implementing a higher standard of stroke care. Loyola's Stroke Center has also been accredited by The Joint Commission as a comprehensive stroke center. Learn more about our telemedicine tools for stroke.
