Program Overview
The goal of Loyola Medicine's MacNeal Sports Medicine Fellowship program is to train fellows to provide excellent care to people of all ages who are physically active.
Experiences are included that focus on the evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of activity-related injuries as well as non-musculoskeletal conditions in athletes.
Fellowship graduates should possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to serve as a team physician, cover mass events, counsel their patients about regular physical activity, and manage medical and orthopaedic conditions arising from such activity.
Program Eligibility
Applications are accepted from residents in, or graduates of, accredited residencies in family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine and PM&R.
Fellowship Length
Loyola Medicine's MacNeal Sports Medicine Fellowship program runs for one year.
Number of Fellows
Loyola Medicine's MacNeal Sports Medicine Fellowship program accepts two fellow each year.
Application Process
We accept applications through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and participate in the NRMP match.
Clinical Experiences
This is a map of the different training sites fellows will rotate through:
Sports Medicine Rotations
- MacNeal Hospital – Center for Sports and Performance
- Loyola University Medical Center
- University of Chicago
Family Medicine or Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Rotations
- MacNeal Family Medicine Center
Core Specialty Rotations
- Primary care – sports medicine
- Orthopedic – sports medicine
- Hand surgery
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Upper extremity orthopedics
- Women's health
- Interventional pain managment
- Musculoskeletal radiology
Teaching Responsibilities
The fellow will provide teaching to medical students and family medicine residents in the family medicine clinic and sports medicine clinic.
The fellow will also regularly present at the fellowship didactic conference as well as the family medicine residency conferences.
Educational Opportunities
- Educational leave – five days per year
- Weekly sports medicine conferences
- Family practice conferences
- Funded CME for sports medicine
Research Opportunities
The fellow will be expected to investigate a topic of interest in depth which will result in a tangible project, such as an article of publishable quality, a presentation at a national or local academic meeting, etc. The fellow is sent each year to the AMSSM Fellows Research Conference.
Leave Policy
Fellows will receive three weeks of vacation per year.
