Program Focus Tracks
Global and Community Health Curriculum
Our Global Health Track for our OB/GYN residents is available to interested residents under the direction of Lena Wiley, MD. Our program is provided in conjunction with Wondoor through University Hospitals in Cleveland, Ohio. The objectives of the longitudinal program include providing community-oriented, compassionate, and effective patient care for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health, particularly as it pertains to our own community and the global community.
- Didactic Sessions – A monthly didactic lecture will take place in the evening focusing on various topics related to international health and facilitated by participants in the program.
- Journal Club – Quarterly journal clubs in which a participant will select and present on a global health journal article that are a critical base for promoting competent practice in resource challenged communities.
- Book Club – Two participants will facilitate a book club biannually on selected texts written by global health experts. The book club will promote interactive discussion on a pertinent global health issues.
- National/ International Global Health Care Conference – Attendance and / or a presentation at one global health conference during the PGY-2 year.
- International Travel – Four week elective in Guyana during PGY-4 resident year learning clinical and surgical skills in a developing country while also participating in teaching of residents/medical officers in the obstetrics and gynecology residency program at the Georgetown Public Hospital in Guyana.
- Grand Rounds – Each participant is required to be the primary presenter during a grand rounds presentation on a international topic of their choice i.e. women’s health issue encountered in Guyana or discussion of topic of your choice learned at a global health conference.
- Final Project – Serve as the culmination of all that was learned during the program and serves to reflect the participant’s knowledge on various issues that affect women abroad.
At the end of this program, each participant will be awarded a certificate of completion from the Loyola Obstetrics and Gynecology Global Health Program.
Resident Education in Academic Teaching Excellence (RELATE) Program
PGY-1 Residents
Residents who self-identify as interested in developing teaching and mentoring skills, with an interest in an academic career.
If they are meeting the objectives of the residency, they will be enrolled in the curriculum.
PGY-2 Residents
At this stage, residents will focus on early development of teaching and leadership skills.
- Develop an educational research project (to use for research requirement if desired)
- Women’s Health Interest Group mentoring, using ACOG roundtable discussions as a model.
- Teaching time out for residents (5-minute review of most important points in a teaching topic) given during resident meetings
- Sit in on specialty advising meetings for MS4s
- Active participation in mid-clerkship feedback process (late PGY-2, early PGY-3)
- Attend one session at Community Health Center
PGY-3 Residents
At this stage, residents will focus on practical curriculum development and leadership.
- Problem-based learning session for students
- Resident education workshop, Residents as Teachers curriculum
- Specialty advising for MS4s
- Peer mentoring to PGY-2s (TTOs)
- Teaching timeouts during chairman’s hour
- Attend one session at Community Health Center
- Transition to residency session
PGY-4 Residents
At this stage, residents will focus on mentorship and leadership.
- Problem-based learning session for students
- Women’s Health Interest Group mentoring, using ACOG roundtable discussions as a model
- Help PGY-3 facilitate resident education workshop
- Transition to residency session
- Peer mentoring to PGY-2s and PGY-3s (TTOs)
- Official designation as a specialty advisor for Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine
- Attend ACOG ACM for student workshops (simulations, round tables) or CREOG/APGO with goal to present
