MacNeal Internal Medicine Residency Program
Welcome to the MacNeal Internal Medicine Residency Program
Thank you for your interest in our Internal Medicine Residency training program at MacNeal Hospital! I encourage you to review our website and see for yourself what makes the MacNeal Internal Medicine program unique.
Forty-two residents train in the Internal Medicine residency program at MacNeal Loyola Hospital in Berwyn, IL. Our diverse resident cohort joins us from eleven nations: Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Peru, Russian Federation, and the United States. We are extremely proud of our diverse residency program.
Our vision is to train young physicians in the art and practice of Internal Medicine. We do this by developing clinical reasoning skills, expanding medical knowledge, and cultivating future leaders in healthcare quality improvement. MacNeal Hospital offers a rich and robust clinical learning environment with a diverse patient population. Our residents and faculty have the privilege to work in a community hospital, providing care to a patients in Berwyn, IL and the surrounding communities. Berwyn is a suburban city approximately 12 miles west of Chicago. Outside of the hospital and clinic settings, our residents and faculty participate in various community service activities sponsored by MacNeal and Loyola Medicine.
Our program utilizes a 4+2 curriculum to better support resident education and wellness. This curriculum ensures that following each four week inpatient rotation, residents will always have a two week outpatient experience. The residents' patient care experiences are enriched by our comprehensive didactics, including an academic half day each week called MedTalks. During each 6 week cycle a specific subspecialty theme, such as Cardiovascular and Endocrinology, will be covered in the MedTalks and noon conferences. Our inpatient medicine rotations remain strong because of our daily bedside rounding and small group teaching by dedicated and experienced teaching faculty and hospitalists.
The residents participate in program and hospital committees each academic year. In addition, we offer optional electives for residents to develop their interests in research, education, and hospital management. We offer a highly flexible curriculum in which residents may explore their interests through specialty electives at Loyola Medical Center. At MacNeal Hospital, residents participate in electives such as the Community Medicine elective which focuses on the care of underprivileged individuals including those who are homeless, and the Medical Spanish elective which provides intensive clinical Spanish education for residents in order to care for our predominately Spanish-speaking patient population. Residents have the opportunity to further enhance their education by attending meetings to present their scholarly work, with the financial support of the program.
The MacNeal IM training program supports each resident, staff, and faculty member through mentorship and fostering a positive learning and working environment. Each resident has a faculty member who is his or her advisor, guiding professional goals and overall progress throughout residency with regularly scheduled consultations. We work to enhance the wellbeing of the faculty and residents through events such as annual retreats and social outings.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if we can help answer any other questions about our program.
