Program Overview & Education
Loyola Medicine's Endocrinology Fellowship program is part of the Division of Endocrinology and is a two year training program leading to board eligibility in endocrinology.
Our goal is to educate our trainees and provide them with knowledge and experience that will enable them to become competent and superb endocrinologists.
Clinical Training
Fellowship training occurs over a two-year period. Designed to develop endocrinology specialists equally capable of pursuing a career in academia or private practice. Fellows obtain their training at Loyola University Medical Center and Hines VA Hospital.
Loyola University Medical Center and Hines VA share a common campus in Maywood, IL, adjacent to the Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine. Training in these venues allows the fellow to be exposed to the best of both public and private medicine.
Fellows spend four months on consult service, four months on research and four months on Hines VA rotation during each year. They are assigned two continuity clinics for two years and rotate on a four-month basis in general outpatient clinics. They also attend one month of pediatric endocrine and two months in reproductive endocrine. There are also rotations through nuclear medicine, pathology (cytology) and clinical labs and endocrine surgery.
Trainees in endocrinology & metabolism actively teach and supervise medical students and residents in internal medicine who rotate through the Endocrine elective. In addition, fellows actively transmit information about patients on consultation service to their primary physicians in the hospital, namely residents part of the Internal Medicine Residency program.
Research Experience
During their fellowship our trainees are encouraged to participate in research projects with faculty. Our current and past fellows have presented their research at national conferences in a wide range of endocrine diseases, co-written book chapters and review articles.
Facilities
Fellows rotate through the inpatient, outpatient and consultative inpatient services of Loyola University Medical Center and Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital and several other Loyola Medicine outpatient locations. The distribution of ages and sex in our clinics approximates their distribution among the general population with endocrine diseases.
Trainees care for patients with a wide range of clinical problems and endocrine pathology. In addition to this, the fellows rotate through disease-specific clinics such as the reproductive endocrine and pediatric endocrine clinics. They also will have training in nuclear medicine, cytopathology and clinical laboratory procedures along with exposure to endocrine surgery.
