Overview and Facts about the Health Equity and Diversity Visiting Clerkship
The Health Equity and Diversity Visiting Clerkship is a four-week experience sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Loyola Medicine for fourth-year students.
The goal of the clerkship is to diversify the physician pipeline and advance diversity, inclusion, and health equity.
Together with critical stakeholders, we are committed to:
- Improving the health and well-being of those underrepresented and under-served in health care through continuous quality improvement initiatives, health equity research, inclusion science, implementation science, outcomes research and community based participatory research
- Increase medical student awareness of opportunities in academic medicine
- Creating health equity and inclusion best practices for patient care and pipeline programs for students, faculty and staff
Accepted applicants will be provided a stipend that students may use at their discretion to cover costs of the rotation.

Who is Eligible to Apply:
We seek all individuals who can bring their diverse experience not only to our institution but to our patients and community as well. This scholarship opportunity is available for individuals belonging to any group historically underrepresented in medicine including, but not limited to, persons of color, LGBTQI-identified or gender non-conforming individuals and individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Applicants must be currently enrolled, full-time medical students who have completed their third year required courses and in good academic standing at a LCME accredited institution. They must also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must meet the same institutional requirements as for all rotating medical students.

How to Apply for the Health Equity and Diversity Visiting Clerkship
Step 1
Required: Submit the Scholarship Application to the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Application requirements include:
- CV or Resume
- Two personal statements (500 to 750 word responses to each essay prompt)
- Two letters of recommendation (at least one of these letters should be from a faculty member at your medical school and letters should be on official letterhead and signed by the letter writer)
- One copy of your medical school transcript (this can be an unofficial copy)
Step 2
Review Process: Once you've submitted your application, you will receive a confirmation email. Applications are reviewed after the application deadline and you will hear about your acceptance within 3-6 weeks. If you have not heard back from us in this timeframe, you are welcome to reach out to one of the program leaders to follow up on the status of your application.
Step 3
Once accepted for this visiting scholarship, the ability to rotate at Loyola University Medical Center will be contingent on the student completing all required paperwork through the VSLO. Completing the VSLO application is required for all accepted students.
Students will be in communication with the specialty leader of their choice to finalize and confirm dates for their visiting clerkship.
What to Expect with the Health Equity and Diversity Visiting Clerkship
Students will have the opportunity to rotate at one of Illinois’ top medical centers in the specialty of their preference. They will work alongside residents, fellows and attendings who carry world-class experience.
Students will also participate in the care of medical complex patients from a diversity of socioeconomic and racial backgrounds.
The visiting clerkship experience will also include:
- Welcome dinner
- Access to residency program directors to learn more about individual programs and residencies
- Connection with a faculty mentor who will provide career advice and coaching
- Curriculum on health equity and social justice
